What do I need to bring to class on the first day?
Upon registration you will receive an email (if provided) from your instructor as to any specific things required for the class. Mostly though you will need clothes you are willing to get dirty in or an apron or smock. You will need a lock for a locker, if you would like to use one. Any printouts, drawings, or objects that inspire you that will help with your project. We have a host of supplies available for use and purchase.

The class I want to take is full, is there a waiting list? When will the class be offered again?
Yes, there are waiting lists for popular classes. Check the calendar for when the next class may be offered.

My class was cancelled, now what?
If your class is canceled due to low enrollment it will be rescheduled at another time. You may receive a full refund or you may have your deposit or fee transferred to another class of your interest.

How long are your classes?
Classes vary in length, anywhere from one night for two hours to 6 weeks, once a week, for three hours. Please check the specific class you are interested in for the times and duration.

What if I miss a class or the instructor cancels a class due to weather or illness?
You may make up lost studio time by coming to work in the studio as long as there is not another class using that space at that time. Check the calendar for available times. Classes canceled for weather or illness will be made up at the discretion of the instructor in collaboration with the students in the class.

Can I come to the studio to work on my project outside of class time?
With your registration you are allowed 5 hours of outside time per week to come in and work on your project. If you find that you would like to use more than the allotted time we ask that you become a Radiant Member which grants you unlimited time to the studio during operating hours.

Do you offer private studio space?
No, but we do offer Radiant Membership to our community space with option to rent shelf space.

Do you offer children’s classes?
At this time we do not offer classes for children. We do offer Parent and Child Clay Date classes. Click Here. Also, anyone over the age of 15 may take classes with the permission of a parent.

What type of clay do you use?
All beginning classes use a low-fire red earthenware clay from Alligator Clay Company in Baton Rouge. You may buy clay directly from us or from Southern Pottery We do not allow any other clay in our beginning classes. Intermediate/Advanced, Radiant Members, and Private Lessons may use other clays depending on approval of the studio manager.

Do you fire work not made at Red Hot?
Yes. We will only fire work to low-fire temperatures.

I came to Clay Date, when can I pick-up my fired work?
Usually it takes one week for your work to be fired. You will receive an email when your work is ready to be picked up. We keep work for 4 weeks after it is completed before we throw it out.

Are the things I’ve made in class non-toxic or safe to eat out of?
Yes. The only exception would be if you purchased your own glaze rather than using the shop glazes that the studio provides. In that case you would have to read the label of the glaze that you purchased.

Is there anyone who should not take a class at Red Hot?
Persons highly allergic to dust or mold may find some parts of the studio irritating. Persons who do not have the ability to lift 25lbs without injury or are pregnant should use caution when registering for a wheel throwing class. Wheel throwing can be very physically demanding for beginners, we recommend you register for a hand-building class if you feel like you may not be able to learn comfortably.

Do you sell supplies?
We have a limited number of supplies used in the making and finishing of clay objects. A full rang of supplies are available at Southern Pottery

Do you sell hand made pottery?
Yes. We have a large collection of cups made by professional artists from around the country. Most have some affiliation with Baton Rouge. Many are LSU alumni. We have two large pottery sales twice a year around Christmas and Mothers Day. Sign up for email notification.

How can I sell my hand made pots at Red Hot?
Both the semi-annual event sales and cup wall are curated by the owners of Red Hot. If you are interested in having your work available for sale you may present a portfolio of 5 images via email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). Please include any pertinent information like resume, contact info, website, etc. We review submissions frequently and hope to get back to you promptly.
