Wheel-Throwing

Beginning throwers will learn the basic skills of making objects on the potter’s wheel: centering, opening, pulling, shaping, trimming and finishing details. Most of the objects made will be functional in nature such as mugs, vases, and bowls. Combining skills with knowledge of form and ergonomics, your pottery will become more sophisticated with practice. We suggest enrolling in at least 4 long-term sessions of beginning throwing before moving up to an intermediate/advanced class. Your instructor will help assess your skill level. You may also register for Intermediate/ Advanced classes after a skills assessment questionnaire or portfolio review.

The Intermediate/ Advanced students will learn how to create more complicated functional objects such as place settings, lidded jars, teapots, goblets, altered forms, large scale serving bowls and vases.

All class levels will teach you how to embellish the surface of your artworks using slips, underglaze, and glaze. The staff at Red Hot will fire your artwork for you so that you can take it home and enjoy it for many years.

All of our beginning classes use terra cotta clay, which is fired in electric kilns. Intermediate and Advanced Students may use mid-range and high-fire clay bodies. Long-term sessions meet once a week for 2 hours for 6 weeks.

In Beginning Handbuilding classes you will be introduced to several methods of constructing with clay. Each class is geared towards a process such as coil, slab, and pinch then combined with a product like tile, large vessels, sculptures, and other functional objects made using just your hands.

We recommend you take three Handbuilding classes, one that specializes in each of the three processes (slab, pinch, coil) before moving on to the intermediate class. Your instructor will help assess your skill level before moving up. You may also register for Intermediate/ Advanced classes after a skills assessment questionnaire or portfolio review.

Intermediate/Advanced classes will focus more on learning more complicated skills like mold making, large-scale sculptures, and high-relief tile.
